Go Set a Watchman is Harper Lee's first novel. It was written in the mid-1950s and was submitted to a number of publishers by Harper Lee's agent, Maurice Crain, in 1957. In a submission letter to Evan Thomas of Harper & Brothers, Mr. Crain wrote, “Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee will be an eye-opener for many Northerners as to Southern attitudes, and the reasons for them, in the segregation battle. Also and incidentally, Miss Lee can write. She is about thirty and bright as a button."
One publisher, J. B. Lippincott, expressed interest in seeing other work by Harper Lee. In April 1957 Lynn Carrick of Lippincott received some material from Maurice Crain that Crain described as “Harper Lee's second novel ... she had written a good deal of this before starting the short novel you now have, Go Set a Watchman."
