"Second language learning is often second culture learning. In order to understand just what second culture learning is, one needs to understand the nature of acculturation, culture shock, and social distance." (Brown, 1980)

This course book, Intercultural Communication, is designed to provide the learners of English as a foreign language at any level of proficiency from intermediate upwards, with basic information about the cultural features of major English speaking countries. It enables the users to have opportunities:

on-To discuss important aspects of culture; -To recognize the relationship between language and culture;

To learn about life in the English-speaking countries;

- To improve conversational ability through intercultural communication. The book consists of 9 units which deal with common issues in the cultural life of some major English-speaking countries. Each unit begins with a text, followed by the exercises to give students a chance to get more information alg about and to discuss the related topics, and ends with a writing task assigned to the students as homework.

A large amount of information in the texts has been taken from the valuable sources listed in the references after each unit and at the end of the book as well.

The authors would like to express the appreciation and gratitude to all the authors in the cultural field for their precious knowledge and understanding which proved helpful in the process of compiling and editing the book. Mistakes, however, are unavoidable and all comments are welcomed.
